Beware of Angel Numbers

Should Christians use angel numbers? The short answer is NO. Keep reading to understand what angel numbers actually are, where they come from, and why something that sounds biblical can lead directly into New Age and occult spirituality.

Why Angel Numbers Can Sound Biblical

Fellow Christians, please, please, please be aware of what “angel numbers” truly are. Upon first glance, angel numbers may seem biblical because, of course, angels are biblical. Numbers are found throughout Scripture, and certain numbers are repeatedly used in significant ways. God also communicates with His people in many different ways throughout the Bible. He used dreams, visions, angels, prophetic imagery, parables, signs, circumstances, words, and patterns.

I believe in angels. I believe the Lord still speaks. I believe God can send angels according to His purposes. I believe God can draw our attention to repeated numbers, words, pictures, dreams, circumstances, or patterns. I believe the Lord sometimes communicates in ways that cause us to stop, seek Him, and ask what He is showing us. Scripture itself demonstrates that God can communicate through symbolism and things that require interpretation. However, everything must ultimately come back to God and His Word. There is a tremendous difference between noticing something repeatedly and asking God whether He is drawing your attention to it, and looking up an “angel number” in a spiritual system that assigns predetermined meanings to numbers supposedly communicated by angels, spirit guides, ascended masters, or other spiritual authorities. The issue is not simply the number. The issue is the source.

Where Angel Numbers Come From

The modern angel-number movement does not come from the Bible. Although mystical interpretations of numbers and different forms of numerology have existed for thousands of years, the contemporary idea of “angel numbers” developed within modern metaphysical and New Age spirituality and became especially popular in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. One prominent figure in popularizing modern angel-number teachings was New Age author Doreen Virtue, who wrote extensively about receiving numerical messages from angels before later rejecting her former New Age practices after professing Christianity. (NOTE: Doreen Virtue converted to conservative evangelical Christianity in 2017.)

Biblical numerical symbolism is not the same thing as numerology. Scripture repeatedly uses numbers such as seven, twelve, and forty in meaningful contexts, and Revelation contains extensive numerical symbolism. However, nowhere does Scripture give believers a “universal code” telling us that whenever we see 111 it means one thing, 222 means another thing, 333 means another, and 444 means something else. There is no biblical “angel number dictionary.” The fact that God uses numbers does not automatically validate every spiritual practice involving numbers, just as the fact that God sends angels does not validate every spiritual practice claiming contact with angels.

The New Age Spiritual System Behind It

This is where Christians need to look beyond the surface. New Age spirituality often speaks about communication from guardian angels, archangels, spirit guides, ascended masters, ancestors, the Higher Self, universal consciousness, and other spiritual authorities. Some of that language can initially sound compatible with Christianity because Scripture absolutely teaches that spiritual beings exist. The Bible speaks about angels, an archangel, cherubim, seraphim, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers. Hebrews 1:14 describes angels as “ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation.” So, acknowledging the spiritual realm is not the problem. Christianity has always acknowledged one.

The problem begins when biblical terminology is mixed with an entirely different spiritual worldview. New Age teachings may speak about Jesus, angels, God, spirit, love, light, healing, ascension, and spiritual revelation while defining those words completely differently from Scripture. Something does not become Christian simply because Christian vocabulary has been placed around it. Paul warns in 2 Corinthians 11:14, “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” The appearance of goodness, light, peace, love, spirituality, or even an angelic identity does not prove that something comes from God.

What Are “Ascended Masters”?

The concept developed through Western esoteric movements and became particularly prominent through Theosophy and later metaphysical and New Age movements. While individual groups define the term somewhat differently, ascended masters are generally presented as spiritually advanced beings, often supposedly former human beings, who have progressed beyond ordinary physical existence and now assist humanity from a higher spiritual plane. These teachings can involve reincarnation, karma, spiritual evolution, enlightenment, the Higher Self, chakra systems, and the belief that a person can eventually escape or transcend the cycle of physical incarnation.

Some teachings describe ascension as progressing through multiple incarnations until a person has dealt with karmic debt, reached sufficient spiritual enlightenment, and no longer needs to reincarnate physically. The individual supposedly merges more completely with his or her Higher Self and becomes capable of guiding others spiritually. People involved in astral projection, channeling, meditation, or other New Age practices may even claim encounters or conversations with these beings.

From a biblical Christian perspective, these are not enlightened deceased human beings who have completed reincarnation and returned to guide humanity. These are demons. Christianity does not teach that human beings repeatedly reincarnate until they reach enlightenment. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” Christianity does not teach that human beings pay off karmic debt through successive lifetimes. We are reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. Christianity does not teach that salvation means merging with a Higher Self. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Spirit Guides Are Not Biblical Angels

Spirit guides are often presented as loving spiritual beings who protect, teach, direct, comfort, or reveal hidden knowledge to people. They may supposedly appear as ancestors, deceased loved ones, enlightened teachers, angels, or other benevolent spiritual personalities. From the biblical perspective I am presenting here, these are not harmless spiritual helpers. When an actual spiritual being presents itself as a deceased person, ascended master, independent spirit guide, or other authority for us to consult, we are dealing with demonic spirits disguising themselves as something good.

Scripture does not instruct God’s people to establish relationships with spirit guides, channel departed spirits, consult the dead, or seek hidden knowledge from spiritual entities. Deuteronomy 18:10–11 specifically condemns practices involving divination, sorcery, mediums, spiritists, and calling up the dead. James 4:7 tells believers, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” We are instructed to submit to God and resist demonic influence, not develop relationships with spiritual beings simply because they claim to be helpful.

God Sending an Angel Is Not the Same as Seeking One

This is one of the most important distinctions in this entire conversation. There is a tremendous difference between God sending an angel and a person attempting to access the spiritual realm through a spirit guide/force. Biblical angels operate under God’s authority. When God sends an angel in Scripture, God initiates the encounter. The angel is His messenger and servant. The believer does not need numerology, tarot cards, crystals, astrology, channeling, or another spiritual system to make contact.

The same principle applies to numbers and signs. There is a difference between God choosing to use a number symbolically and a person practicing numerology. There is a difference between God giving a sign and divination. There is a difference between God giving someone a prophetic dream and attempting to manipulate the spiritual realm for hidden knowledge. There is a difference between the Holy Spirit guiding a believer and a person consulting a spirit guide. There is a difference between biblical prophecy and fortune-telling. The existence of the genuine does not validate the counterfeit.

New Age Spirituality Often Mixes Truth With Error

One reason New Age spirituality can be deceptive to Christians is that it does not necessarily reject every Christian idea. It can borrow Christian terminology and then redefine it. A person may hear references to God, Jesus, Christ, angels, spirit, light, love, healing, ascension, and spiritual gifts and assume the teaching must somehow be compatible with Christianity. However, the meaning behind those words can be completely different.

Jesus may be presented as an enlightened teacher or ascended master rather than the unique Son of God. “Christ” may be transformed into a state of consciousness rather than referring to Jesus Christ Himself. “Ascension” may refer to spiritual evolution rather than Christ’s bodily ascension. “Spirit” may become universal consciousness or energy rather than the Holy Spirit. Angels may become personal spiritual guides accessed through numerology or other practices rather than servants of Yahweh operating under His authority. The terminology may sound familiar while the worldview underneath it is completely different. Same words do not mean the same God (god).

Why Angel Numbers Are Concerning

This is why angel numbers should not be viewed merely as cute little numbers with encouraging meanings attached to them. They belong to a much larger spiritual ecosystem. When you begin researching the world surrounding angel numbers, you quickly encounter numerology, astrology, zodiac signs, tarot cards, healing crystals used for spiritual energy, aura readings, chakra systems, psychic readings, manifestation practices, palm reading, tea-leaf reading, spirit guides, astral projection, channeling, and other New Age and occult practices. Not every person who looks up 444 understands this background. Many people have probably never researched any of it. They may simply see the same number repeatedly, search for its meaning, receive an encouraging message, and believe an angel or even God has spoken to them.

That is exactly why Christians need to understand the source. Seeing 11:11 is not demonic. Seeing 444 is not demonic. Numbers themselves are not evil. Noticing patterns is not sinful. The problem begins when we take that number to a spiritual system outside of God and His Word and ask that system to give us revelation. If I repeatedly notice something and believe the Lord may be drawing my attention to it, I can take it directly to Him. I can pray, search Scripture, listen to the Holy Spirit, and test whatever I believe I am receiving. I do not need a New Age angel-number chart to interpret God’s voice.

Scripture Commands Us to Test the Spirits

First John 4:1 gives Christians one of the clearest instructions concerning spiritual experiences: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.” Scripture does not tell us to accept something because it speaks about love. It does not tell us to trust something because it identifies itself as an angel, a guide, an ancestor, or a being of light. We are commanded to test the spirits. This is why discernment matters so much.

The Issue Is the Source

So yes, I believe in angels. Yes, I believe the Lord speaks. Yes, I believe God can send angels. Yes, I believe God can use numbers, words, pictures, dreams, circumstances, patterns, and other things to draw our attention to something. Yes, I believe there is an active supernatural realm around us. But because I believe the spiritual realm is real, I also believe we need to take spiritual discernment very seriously.

Christians, please be aware. Please be awake. Know what you are participating in before opening yourself spiritually to something simply because the words “angel,” “Jesus,” “God,” “light,” or “love” have been attached to it. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the spiritual realm. Learn where these teachings came from. Understand the worldview behind them. Test the spirits. Test the message. Test the source. And above everything else, bring it all back to the Word of God.
