The Church We Built vs. The Church He Wants

Not everything modern in the church is evil… but not everything modern is biblical either.

We’ve built systems, structures, and routines that can look impressive on the outside, but the real question is this… did it come from Him?

Jesus didn’t come to start a polished system or maintain a weekly “production.”

He came to form a people, a people who actually look like Him. People who live transformed, not just informed. People who don’t just gather, but walk in truth, holiness, power, and love every single day.

It is not about what “works” or what draws a crowd, it’s about what reflects Christ. Because at the end of the day, we’re not called to build something that runs smoothly… we’re called to become something that looks like Jesus.

Can you imagine if Jesus said things like this? Or if Paul wrote these into his letters to the churches?

• “Let’s tone this down so no one feels uncomfortable… we should lessen the intensity so it’s easier to receive.”

Truth: Jesus never diluted truth to protect comfort. His words exposed hearts, not padded them. When truth loses its edge, transformation loses its power.

• “We don’t want to confront that… we might lose people.”

Truth: Paul confronted because he loved. Avoiding truth to keep people doesn’t protect them, it keeps them bound. Real love risks rejection to bring freedom.

• “As long as the room is full, we’re doing something right.”

Truth: Crowds followed Jesus… and still walked away unchanged. Heaven doesn’t measure fullness of seats… it measures fullness of surrender.

• “Keep it light, keep it easy… don’t go too deep. I don’t know if the people are ready for that.”

Truth: Depth is what matures people. Holding back truth keeps people dependent and shallow. The early church grew because they were fed truth, not filtered, watered down forms of it.

• “Avoid the messy people… they complicate things.”

Truth: Jesus ran toward the messy. The broken weren’t interruptions, they were THE mission. If there’s no room for real mess, there’s no room for real healing.

• “We just need to keep people engaged and coming back.”

Truth: The goal was never attendance, it was transformation. You can keep people coming and never see them changed. Jesus called people to follow, not just return.

• “Let’s not talk about repentance like that… it’s too intense.”

Truth: Repentance isn’t harsh, it’s the doorway to life. Jesus preached it. Paul preached it. Without it, people are comforted in the very thing that’s destroying them.

• “We need a tighter program… everything has to stay on schedule. Stick to the script… we can’t go off plan.”

Truth: What happens when heaven interrupts your schedule? Jesus was the interruption. When structure controls everything, there’s no room left for the Spirit to move.

• “Did you stock the green room full of my favorite snacks?”

Truth: While people sit hungry for truth, leadership is being catered to. Jesus didn’t separate Himself from people, He broke bread with them. There was no backstage version of Him.

• “Make sure everything feels polished and professional.”

Truth: We’ve learned how to perfect presentation… but presence can’t be manufactured. The early church carried power, not just a polished empty vessel.

• “We don’t have time for that person right now.”

Truth: Jesus always had time for the one. The interruption was often the miracle. When people become inconveniences, we’ve lost the heart of the Shepherd.

• “We need to protect the brand.”

Truth: The early church didn’t protect an image, they upheld truth. Reputation was never the priority. Faithfulness was.

• “Keep all leadership decisions behind closed doors.”

Truth: The Kingdom isn’t built on hidden control. There was accountability, discussion, and shared discernment. Darkness protects power… light produces trust.
